Title: THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize Friday, March 8, 2013 as International Women's Day in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, each year, people all over the world celebrate International Women's Day on March 8, marking the economic, political, and social achievements of women; and
 
WHEREAS, International Women's Day has been observed since it was first established in 1910, during the second International Conference of Working Women, held in Copenhagen; and
 
WHEREAS, this year we celebrate the 102nd International Women's Day which, as designated by the United Nations, is themed "A promise is a promise: Time for action to end violence against women"; and
 
WHEREAS, statistics about worldwide violence against women reveal horrific truths, like the fact that 50% of sexual assaults worldwide are committed against girls under the age of 16, or that 4 million women and girls are victims of global human trafficking, or that the most common act of violence against women is being slapped-from 9% of women in Japan to 52% in provincial Peru; and
 
WHEREAS, International Women's Day is a time to reflect on progress that has been made, to call for change, and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their countries and communities.
