WHEREAS, Zone 6/Special Deployment Division is responsible for approximately 80% of District 2 and within the District there has been a positive increase in transparency and police interaction with residents of the community and continual decrease in crime since the police station reopened in 2008; and,
WHEREAS, recently, Zone 6 Officers and Detectives were involved in a number of in-depth investigations that reduced drug activity, street robberies, thefts and quality of life issues that were plaguing several communities, public parks and two privately owned apartment complexes in West Pittsburgh; and,
WHEREAS, the number of arrests and seizures of drugs, guns, cash and stolen property that resulted from these investigations, and other cases, has undoubtedly made a significant impact on the overall safety of District 2; and,
WHEREAS, Zone 6 is committed to working hand in hand with the community, so as to enhance the quality of life and safety of the citizens who visit, work, and reside in our many diverse neighborhoods which is also evident by their participation in various community events; and,
WHEREAS, in addition to their brave work on the streets, Zone 6, headed by Commander Scott Schubert, braves the cold waters of the Allegheny River to raise awareness and funds for the athletes who participate in Special Olympics Pennsylvania where over the past two years, Commander Schubert and Team Zone 6 personally raised over $50,000 for Special Olympics; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend the Zone 6/Special Deployment Division for helping to make Pittsburgh a most livable city; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Monday, September 24, 2012, to be "Zone 6 Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
