Title: Now, therefore be it resolved that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby honor the great work of the Carnegie Libraries of Pittsburgh; and Be it further resolved, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare February 20th through 25th Carnegie Library Week in the City of Pittsburgh.

Whereas, established as a public trust in 1895, Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh serves the citizens of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County with a distinguished history of leadership among the country's great public libraries; and
Whereas, the mission of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh is to engage our community in literacy and learning; and
Whereas, the Library has always been an integral part of the educational process by helping children gain early literacy skills and by encouraging children and parents to learn together; and
Whereas, each year the Library provides more than 8,000 free programs, classes and other learning and training opportunities that are tailored to meet the dynamic and diverse needs of people living in Western Pennsylvania; and
Whereas, In 2011, more than 2.2 million people visited the library system making it the region's most-visited asset; and
Whereas, beginning Monday, February 20, most Pittsburgh library locations will have expanded hours, opening more evenings, after school and on weekends, offering Library customers greater access to programs, materials and facilities; and
Whereas, there are many more reasons to celebrate the Carnegie Libraries of Pittsburgh including their collection of more than 5 million items including books, CDs, movies, online databases and more; free Internet access; quality educational programming for kids, teens and adults; professional librarians qualified to research any question; and resources for job seekers; and
Whereas, to celebrate the restoration of hours and all that the Library has to offer, several Friends of the Library groups will host Customer Appreciation Open Houses at their respective neighborhood libraries during the week of February 20; and
