WHEREAS, on June 26, 2003, in Lawrence v. Texas, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down all state laws “making it a crime for two persons of the same sex to engage in certain intimate sexual conduct;” and,
WHEREAS, on June 26, 2013, the Supreme Court struck down prohibitions on federal recognition of valid marriages between same-sex couples and invalidated the first half of the “Defense of Marriage Act” in the United States v. Windsor; and,
WHEREAS, on June 26, 2015, the Supreme Court struck down all laws prohibiting marriage between two persons of the same sex in Obergefell v. Hodges; and,
WHEREAS, in light of the fact that the U.S. Supreme Court has issued three major ruling advancing the rights of LGBTQ people all on June 26, that date should be declared LGBTQ Equality Day in the City of Pittsburgh.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Friday, June 26, 2015 to be “LGBTQ Equality Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
